The Duchess of Sussex’s wedding to Prince Harry in 2018 was not the first time she had ever strolled down the aisle.
Meghan Markle may now be known worldwide for being the American actress who married Prince Harry, but the royal wedding was not her first. Before her romance with Prince Harry, which apparently started in 2016, Meghan had been married before to an American.
The Duchess of Sussex, 44, married American film producer Trevor Engelson in August 2011 after meeting him in a bar when she was just 23 years old. Their relationship was thought to have been positive for many years despite the fact that they divorced just two years after their wedding.
Although their personal dynamics are not well known to the general public, some information regarding their wedding has been made public. The Hollywood Reporter briefly covered their wedding because of Meghan’s participation in the US television series Suits.
Despite her lack of fame at the time, Meghan reportedly made a specific request of her guests at her first wedding, which was somewhat humorous.
In her book The Palace Papers, Tina Brown quoted a guest who joined the 2011 wedding.
As reported by Brown, the guest said: “The only surprising note is that Meghan sent out a note requesting ‘no social media, please’.
“We were all laughing because she had been on Suits for a few months and at that point, we were like, is she kidding me? She was like, ‘I’m a really big actress’.”
Due to “irreconcilable differences,” Meghan and Trevor split up in 2013, and their divorce was finalized in 2014.
After their brief affair, Meghan gave up her career on Suits to marry King Charles’ youngest son, and it took her four years to go down the aisle once more to marry Prince Harry in Windsor.
Harry asked Meghan for her hand in marriage at their Kensington Palace home after they had been dating for less than two years. Their wedding was held less than a year later.
Although she was accepted into the Royal family, Meghan and Harry left the Firm in 2020 to relocate to Montecito, California, ending her new life as a working royal. The Duchess of Sussex has since been forging her own way by starting a business, a podcast series, and even agreements with streaming behemoths like Netflix.
