A banker was strolling through town when he spotted his old friend Tom, an 80-year-old rancher.
Tom had lost his wife about a year ago, and word around town was that he was planning to marry a much younger “mail-order” bride.
Curious and concerned, the banker walked over and asked, “Tom, is it true what I’ve been hearing — you’re getting married again?”
Tom grinned and said, “Sure is! She’ll be 21 in November.”
The banker, trying to be tactful, knew an 80-year-old man might not be able to keep up with the energy of a 21-year-old bride.
Hoping to help his friend avoid trouble, he suggested, “Tom, maybe you should consider hiring a ranch hand to help you around the place.
You know, take a little pressure off.”
Tom nodded thoughtfully and said, “That’s a good idea. I’ll look for one this afternoon.”
About four months later, the banker bumped into Tom again while in town.
With a smile, he asked, “So, how’s the new wife?”
Tom beamed and replied, “She’s doing great — she’s pregnant!”
The banker, feeling proud that his advice might’ve helped, asked, “And how’s the hired hand?”
Without missing a beat, Tom said, “She’s pregnant too!”
