One chilly winter morning, Bob and his wife were sitting in the kitchen enjoying breakfast while listening to the local radio station. Suddenly, the weather announcer came on with an urgent update:
“We are expecting 4 to 6 inches of snow today. All residents must park their vehicles on the even-numbered side of the street to allow the snowplows to get through.”
Without a second thought, Bob’s wife put down her coffee, ran outside, and dutifully moved her car to the even-numbered side.
Exactly one week later, a similar scene played out. As they were eating breakfast, the radio crackled to life again:
“We are expecting a heavier storm today with 6 to 8 inches of snow. Please ensure your car is parked on the odd-numbered side of the street so the snowplows can clear the roads.”
Once again, Bob’s wife rushed outside and shifted her car to the other side of the street.
The following week, they were back at the kitchen table when the announcer’s voice boomed through the speakers for a third time:
“Attention residents, a massive storm is heading our way. We are expecting 8 to 10 inches of accumulation today. You must park your car on the…”
Zap!
Before the announcer could finish the sentence, the electric power snapped completely off, plunging the house into total silence.
Bob’s wife instantly panicked. With a look of sheer desperation and worry on her face, she turned to her husband and cried, “Oh no, honey! I don’t know what to do! The power went out before he could finish! Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snowplow can get through?!”
Bob took a slow sip of his coffee, looked at her with the deep, patient affection unique to a husband who has seen it all, and said softly:
“Why don’t you just leave it in the garage this time?”
