A sentence containing the expression “I presume”
A teacher asked her class:
“Make a sentence using the phrase ‘I presume.’”
A girl in the front raised her hand.
“Yesterday my mom washed all the dishes by hand… so I presumed the dishwasher was broken.”
“Very good,” the teacher said.
Another student went next:
“This morning my dad drove the Volkswagen… so I presumed the BMW wouldn’t start.”
“Excellent,” the teacher nodded.
From the back, Little Johnny stood up.
The teacher paused for a second… then sighed.
“Yes, Johnny?”
He spoke slowly, very serious:
“Yesterday, I saw my grandpa leave the house with a newspaper under his arm… and walk toward the bushes.”
The class went quiet.
The teacher already looked nervous.
“And?” she asked carefully.
Johnny shrugged:
“So I presumed…”
A pause.
“…the bathroom was occupied.”
The teacher let out a breath.
Too soon.
Johnny added, casually:
“Because if it wasn’t…”
Another pause.
“…he wouldn’t need the newspaper.”
Silence.
Then the class exploded.
The teacher closed her eyes.
Johnny sat down, satisfied.
