Fruit flies may be very bothersome and persistent, particularly in the warmer months when there are plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Thankfully, a fruit fly trap prepared with lemon and cloves is an easy, natural solution to the issue that doesn’t use harmful chemicals!
What You’ll Need
- 1 lemon
- A handful of whole cloves
- A small bowl or plate
- A sharp knife
- Plastic wrap (optional)
Detailed Instructions
1. Get the lemon ready.
- Cut the lemon in half to begin.
- This enables the release of the fruit’s fragrant oils, which will draw fruit flies.
- To further release the citrus aroma, you can also make a few cuts in the flesh. The flies will find the fresh lemon juice to be an alluring invitation.
2. Put the Cloves in
- Then put whole cloves into the halves of the lemon.
- Just insert the cloves’ pointy points into the lemon’s surface, making sure to equally space them out.
- Because of their potent aroma, which will encourage flies to approach the trap, you should place the cloves where they are visible.
3. Put the lemon in a bowl or plate.
- Place the lemon halves on a small dish or bowl once they have been studded with cloves.
- In addition to providing the trap with a place to sit without making a mess, this will contain any extra juice or clove leftovers.
4. Using plastic wrap is optional.
- You might use plastic wrap to cover the bowl or plate for extra impact. Use a toothpick or fork to make a few tiny holes in the wrap.
- Fruit flies will be attracted to the lemon and cloves in this small, contained space, but it will be difficult for them to leave once they are inside.
- Once the flies are drawn in, the wrap helps keep them inside, making it more difficult for them to fly out.
5. Position the Trap Close to the Infestation
- In the end, set up your fruit fly trap where you’ve observed the greatest activity, which is probably next to a fruit dish, your compost bin, or the kitchen sink.
- Placing the trap close by will assist attract fruit flies, who are especially drawn to ripe or rotten fruit.
