An elderly man is at risk of losing his home after mistakenly transferring $71,400 to the wrong person instead of the company that moved the house into his lot.

GL, an 88-year-old man from Bundaberg, Queensland, sent money from his X bank account to his ANZ account on June 14.

Unfortunately, Mr GL had accidentally saved the account under the wrong name, which resulted in him sending the money to a complete stranger.

He and his daughter MW realized the error within three hours, but it was too late. The random recipient of Mr GL’s money promptly withdrew the funds on the same day and has since refused to hand the money back.

The recipient withdrew the money the same day and both banks told Mr. GL that there was nothing they could do.

At present, Mr Leyton currently stays with family or sleeps in his shed, as financial pressure has left him unable to pay to have running water connected at his house.

He also fears that he may lose his home if he is unable to get the $71,000 back.

The ANZ bank told reporters that they are currently working with police on the incident.

The man who allegedly stole Mr Layton’s money has been charged and is due to face court.
