Former U.S. President Barack Obama drew attention this week after remarking that Donald Trump’s return to the White House feels like “Halloween every day,” saying the atmosphere is full of chaos and no joy.
Speaking at a Democratic campaign rally in Norfolk, Virginia on November 1 in support of gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger, Obama admitted that even he hadn’t fully anticipated how turbulent the current political climate would become under Trump’s renewed leadership.
“It’s not as if we didn’t see signs before,” he said. “I’ll admit that it’s turned out even worse than I thought. But I did try to warn everybody.”
Obama went on to spot several controversies surrounding Trump over the past ten months, beginning with allegations involving financial ties to a convicted cryptocurrency mogul. He suggested that Trump has prioritized wealthy allies and insiders.
“Is the economy improving for you?” Obama asked the crowd.

“Because it has definitely improved for Trump and his circle. Since he returned to office, crypto deals and other ventures have raked in hundreds of millions. Some of that money is coming from powerful foreign investors hoping to stay in favor with the administration.”
Then came the Halloween punchline:
“It’s like every day is Halloween,” Obama quipped. “But instead of treats, it’s all tricks.”
The comment rapidly gained traction online. Supporters praised his delivery:
“Obama is still the GOAT when it comes to speaking.”
“Obama has convictions. Trump just has convictions of a… different sort.”
“Thank you for being the voice of reason.”
“His leadership is unmatched.”
“Trump could never compare.”

Obama also criticized Trump’s recent $300 million in White House renovations including a gold-plated bathroom and a newly built ballroom along with the removal of parts of the historic Rose Garden.
“He’s been very busy,” Obama said dryly, “making sure nobody gets mud on their shoes and decorating everything in gold.”
He also referenced an AI-generated video Trump shared, depicting himself in bizarre scenarios during recent protests.
“All of this spectacle is meant to distract,” Obama concluded. “Because while the wealthiest people are gaining more power and more money, your cost of living keeps rising.”
